The Gateway Garden (5386 N Ravenswood Ave) and Bowmanville Garden (5410 N Bowmanville Ave) Plots are available to gardeners interested in growing vegetables and edible plants. An important effort is underway to expand the Gateway Garden.  Please read more and join that preservation effort. 2018 was a BIG year for the Gateway Garden; click here view a list of accomplishments!


The 2019 BCO Vegetable Garden Plot Application, for the Gateway Garden and Bowmanville Garden, is now closed.

There are still great ways to get involved!
Please keep an eye on the Events Calendar and email Gardening@bcochicago.org to learn more about other great ways to get involved and to be added to our email list. There will be tons of engagement opportunities available throughout the entire growing season.


Annually, gardeners interested in applying for a plot should:

Step 1: DO NOT PAY FEES until you receive notification of a plot assignment.

Step 2: Review the Vegetable Plot Rules, Guidelines, and Application Form

Step 3: Complete, sign, and submit form per the instructions on the application.

Step 4: DO NOT PAY FEES until you receive notification of a plot assignment.

The 2019 application cycle begins February 1, 2019 and applications are due March 1, 2019. The application form, guidelines and rules are updated annually.

Gardeners will be notified as to whether they have been assigned a plot by Saturday, March 16, 2019.

Gardeners are required to attend a Mandatory Vegetable Gardening Orientation which will be held the first week of April, date and time forth coming. Keep up with the vegetable gardening schedule at bcochicago.org/events-calendar.

* When all plots are assigned, applicants are placed on a Wait List for plots that might become available during the season.  A completed application is required to get on the Wait List. *

As of 2019, the cost of renting a plot is $30 per season for 4′ X 6′ or 4′ X 8′ plots at the Bowmanville Garden or 4′ X 8′ plots at the Gateway Garden. Once assigned a plot, all gardeners are required to become members of the BCO ($20) and to fulfill 6 volunteer Hours for community garden maintenance or volunteer at BCO community events.
