Greenspace

The BCO is dedicated to preserving a high quality of urban living for over 1,500 households in the Bowmanville community. One major focus has been to secure and preserve permanent open space within the community’s borders.

The BCO Greenspace Committee formed in 2008 to research and evaluate current open space within Bowmanville. Together with city, state, and federal officials and organizations and foundations committed to the preservation of open land, the BCO GreenSpace Committee has explored potential opportunities for permanent green space within the community.

Through this advocacy, the BCO GreenSpace Committee successfully partnered with the City of Chicago Department of Planning & Zoning, 40th Ward Alderman Patrick J. O’Connor, U.S. Congressman Mike Quigley, Illinois State Senator Heather Steans, Illinois State Representative Gregory Harris, OpenLands, Friends of the Parks and NeighborSpace to finance the purchase, demolition and redevelopment of the property at 5384 North Bowmanville Ave.

This achievement represents a major milestone in our ongoing effort to provide permanent open space within our community.

GreenSpace History

Thank You To Our GreenSpace Contributors!

Bowmanville is turning green — thanks to you!

Thanks to longtime Bowmanville resident Tom Kennedy, a new 6-foot tall sign greeted visitors to the new GreenSpace on the day of the Ice Cream Social in August 2011. Featuring a sketch created by GreenSpace Committee member Kris Neurauter, the sign illustrates the landscaping plan that emerged after a series of community brainstorming sessions in 2010. This plan is now being implemented by a newly formed Greenspace Design Group that has been meeting over the summer to identify tree and plant species for the new greenspace, map out materials needed for the Stump Stomp and Rock Walk areas, determine locations for the new rain garden, arbor and benches as well as other hardscape features. Led by Neurauter, members of the design group include Ellen Jurczak, Diana Liefer, Mary Jude Ramirez, Betty Redmond, Katy Rico, Ellen Schmidt, Dena Van der Wal, and Poonam Thaker.
