Are you ‘in the loop’ on what is happening in our neighborhood?

Does your block have a block captain keeping you updated?  The best way to stay safe is to stay informed.  We will keep the information flowing through the block captains.

Contact membership@bcochicago.org with the name of a person on your block who can be your liaison.  Check out the BCO Facebook page for ongoing discussions on crime, graffiti and safety.

Keep up the fight against graffiti in Bowmanville

On November 21, nineteen neighbors came out to walk the neighborhood in a ‘Graffiti Sweep’.  We identified and reported 213 instances of graffiti to the city for cleanup.  Much of the cleanup happened the following week.  Help us stay on top of this continuing problem.

You can easily report graffiti yourself by calling 311 or by submitting a report online at http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/streets/provdrs/graffiti_blasters/svcs/mayor_daley_s_graffitiblasters.html

Don’t miss the next CAPS Meeting for our area (Beat 2012):

Wednesday, February 9, at 7pm
St. Gregory Bingo Hall, 1609 W. Gregory

Be sure that someone from your block is there to keep you informed and voice your concerns.

Call for Content!  The Winter Issue of the Bowmanville Bee is in the works.

Do you have news to share or want to advertise?  Tell us about something interesting that’s happening with our neighbors.  We welcome baby news, photos and other ‘shout outs’!         Contact news@bcochicago.org with submissions.

It’s your community. We need your input.  Content deadline is January 15th.

Seeking volunteer roles for the BCO:

  • EBee and EBlast editor:  we are looking for a volunteer interested to act as editor of our online eBee and eBlast news emails.  These mails are put together in between the quarterly printed “Bowmanville Bee” newsletters and are oriented around timely information that the Bowmanville community needs to know.  The editor would be responsible to set the schedule, identify and solicit relevant contributions, edit them into a cohesive email bulletin, and manage the mailing to the BCO receiver list via our website tools.  This is a fun way to do a little writing and stay plugged in to what is going on in the neighborhood.  Please contact comm@bcochicago.org if you are interested.

  • Advertising Coordinator for the Quarterly newsletter:  we are seeking someone who can coordinate sale of advertising space in our Bowmanville Bee newsletter.  This person would be the primary point of contact to any individuals or businesses advertising in the newsletter.   This volunteer would coordinate ad copy submissions and final ad lineup with the Managing editor of the Bee.  This role is a fun and easy way for someone to build valuable contacts with owners of local businesses and stay current on local happenings.  Please contact news@bcochicago.org if you are able to help out.

  • Bee Delivery volunteers:  we need a few more people to take routes to deliver newsletters.  Your route will be one or two blocks, four times a year.  It’s a nice way to get out in the neighborhood and get some fresh air while helping out the BCO.  Please contact news@bcochicago.org to volunteer.

Wishing you a peaceful New Year!

Thank you for your ongoing support of the BCO and our community.  Together we have made Bowmanville a great place to be in 2010.  We have accomplished so much over this past year – tangible things we can all enjoy and be proud of.  Highlights include our newly acquired GreeenSpace, the inspiring new Berwyn tunnel mural, and our engaging gardens and fantastic annual events that just keep getting better.   We look forward to more great things to come around ‘Beautiful Bowmanville’ in 2011.

Peace to you all.

Bowmanville Garden Walk and Photo Contest

Saturday July 10 11:00 AM to 4:30 PM

You still have time to take pictures of your favorite plant or a Bowmanville landscape or garden art found in our community for an entry in the 2010 Garden Walk Photo Contest. The contest is judged by all the visitors and participants in the Garden Walk and the winning picture is used for the poster and promotion next year!

Billy Kuczek won last year and took this picture of the seating bench in the garden of Joe Charles and Anne Boyle.

The Garden Walk needs your garden! Sign up to show your yard in this year’s event. You can also receive a consultation from the Illinois Master Gardeners.  Then at the end of the day all participants and volunteers enjoy food and drink at the Garden Walk awards party.  Last year we had vegetable gardens, container gardens, goldfish ponds, garden art, and casual gathering areas on view.  A Condo shade garden on Farragut was awarded “most improved” from year to year.  We are looking for more residents to participate and make this year fun and interesting for all. Beginner gardeners and new gardens are welcome and appreciated. Click here to download Garden Walk /Photo Contest entry form

Bowmanville GreenSpace Planning Continues

Keep watching for exciting progress and our fundraising kickoff as we work to create permanent green space in Bowmanville!  We are seeking input and participation from all interested community members.

For more information or to join the GreenSpace Committee, please email  Greenspace@bcochicago.org  We welcome your input.

Support our Local Businesses: Shopping local has many benefits!

Fresher produce: You can bet that the products you buy from your local pantry, bakery, and farmers market are freshly picked, placed and prepared.

Proximity: Save gas and walk or ride your bike!

Helping a neighbor: Many of the small retailers in your neighborhood have been in business for generations, and it’s what they do best. Your exchange of cash for their goods gives them a reason to continue doing what they love.

Keeping the cash at home: After the sale is made, local businesses return almost 80% of earnings right back into the community where you live

Strengthen community character: A self-sufficient community is one that can grow and prosper. Without local enterprises many more buildings stand abandoned and the appeal for launching a small business begins to diminish when there is limited local spending.

News from the 40th Ward office: Rabid Bat Alert‏

On Tuesday, May 11th a bat was found in the vicinity of Damen and Summerdale.  It was submitted for rabies examination and determined to be rabid by the Illinois State Public Health Laboratory.

All residents should keep their dogs, cats and ferrets on a leash when out of their homes.  If the dog, cat or ferret does not have a current rabies vaccination, please see a licensed veterinarian immediately to have the pet inoculated with this rabies vaccine.

You are advised not to handle any bats or wild animals.  If any bats are found, please call the City of Chicago at 311, and they will inform the Chicago Department of Animal Care and Control.

(Submitted by) Diane Sheehan   40th Ward Service Office

Rat sightings:Please call 311…they are back! Any sightings must be called in order for us not to have another summer of rat infestations. Dog owners please keep your yard free of doggie poo…this attracts rats!

Gentle reminder: Dog walkers: Please be courteous of where you let your dogs do their duty. Many BCO neighbors have spent lots of time and money making their yards beautiful! Please clean up after your dog…it is a hefty fine!

Date Set for Bowmanville Green Space/Park Planning Meeting

As part of the BCO’s quest to secure permanent green space within our community, the BCO GreenSpace Committee will host a charrette on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM in the Tempel Steel Training Room, 5448 North Wolcott.

This charrette is a collaborative planning process harnessing the talents and energies of our community to create a plan for park development. This brainstorming session will help identify the community’s priorities, suggest potential uses for the open space on Bowmanville Avenue at Bell, and develop potential designs for this space at a conceptual level. The ideas generated at this meeting will help the BCO GreenSpace Committee develop a proposal that will be utilized to acquire support and funding for this project.

We are seeking input from all interested community members. Please join us in our efforts to maintain open space in Bowmanville by participating in this key meeting. If you plan to attend the meeting, please RSVP by email to Kris Neurauter at krisneurauter@gmail.com (this will help us set up chairs in the room and have enough materials for all)

Alderman update

The BCO held its latest in our ongoing series of face to face meetings with Alderman O’Connor on January 28th.   We were pleased to hear that they have launched their newly updated web site.  Check it out at www.aldermanoconnor.com.  They also maintain a contact list for ward updates via email – you can contact the ward office to be added to this list ward40@cityofchicago.org or look for online signup on their website.  We discussed graffiti in the neighborhood, as many residents notice what appears to be an uptick in this activity.  He indicated calling 311 with specific addresses of sites to be cleaned is essential to keeping up with this.  The blasting cleanup of graffiti on brick work is happening fairly quick, however cleanup requiring painting is lagging due to weather and resources.  Continue to call 311 as it will get done as they are able.  Recycling continues to be on a pickup schedule for every second week.  There have been some glitches with missed routes which they are hoping to improve upon by proposing the ward take over our recycling pickup.  Coordination of recycling pickup is currently rotated amongst various city resources.  We used this meeting opportunity to make Ald. O’Connor aware of 3 of the BCO initiatives that we are focused on this year:

  • a new block club/block captain program encouraging people to “Know Their Neighbors!” to improve information sharing for safety & social reasons
  • an initiative to acquire permanent green space within the boundaries of Bowmanville
  • an initiative around creation of some public art in the area.

Please come to the BCO Open Meeting Feb 18th to hear more about these great projects!  Continue to contact the alderman’s office for concerns that you have regarding our community:  773-769-1195.  Let the BCO know what your issues are too so we can help with follow up.
